I tried to avoid the word "pilot". A "Segelflieger" or a
"velivole" or a "planeador" is something else. We consider ourselves
more sportsmen than pilots. We are a special breed of the air, not just pilots. Or .. so
we think.
The corresponding Greek word "anemoporoi" denotes people who "travel with
the wind".
Few countries would find it easy to contain all the glider pilots in a brief list. For
our small gliding community in Greece that is possible.
Unfortunately the archives of our National Aeroclub, where all the A,B,C badges were
recorded (since the 30ies) have been lost. So we had to rely on the archives of our Civil
Aircraft Authority. They contain pilots from 1960.
Since then until 2006, only 166 glider pilot licenses were issued (in 46 years). That
means that older glider pilots have known every other pilot, his abilities, and the funny
stories about him. Every glider pilot has his funny stories to tell.
You can read the lists if you like. It will be all Greek to you. Do not try to
pronounce the names, it is a hopeless drill.
